I remember being a child and being told, ” You can dig to China.” Well let me tell you, to a seven year old boy, it can really spark the imagination! I have always been fascinated by the people and the culture of the east. I found these photos thru a blog at https://www.flickr.com/photos/ralphrepo_photolog/ . I hope you enjoy and please do let me know your favorites. If these are popular, I have found a treasure trove of old Chinese photos which I plan to put up in the coming week or two!

I love old photos, especially the ones showing people’s faces. It helps me remember that they were not so different from us, though many of them were a lot more wretched.

Coincidentally I am currently reading Pearl Buck’s The Good Earth. These photos really help hone the setting and people since most of these are from that time period. May I link to your post when I post my review?

Fascinating! I don’t know how many holes I dug in our back yard as a child trying to get to China! 🙂
Never got anywhere but had a lot of great memories 🙂
I remember being told I could “dig all the way to China”. I tried. It never worked. These photos are quite remarkable.
I tried too 🙂 It was a messy process which resulted nothing…but it was a lot of fun 🙂 Thank you for coming by!
Love these old photos, thanks for sharing.

Just mailed you two scans. As an exclusive “première”!
Ya be good naw!
I love old photos so this post was especially dazzling to me, thank you. I like them all, but especially the house/canal photos and the beggars–for their depiction of true life.
It is really eye opening to see the back alleys! thank you for coming by, have a great week!
They are all too good to choose but if I’m forced I choose the pictures of the Canton canals.
Thank you for posting them for us all to see I hope you post more
Thank you for your comment, and for stopping by 🙂 Have a great week!
Great Wall of China is fascinating. That China is dead, amazingly in 10 years they have destroyed this huge country, it’s amazing. It makes you ponder. Thanks for sharing!
I agree, it does make you wonder. How could you utterly destroy a society which has nearly unlimited resources…..Have a great holiday weekend 🙂
